Courthouse and Jail Rock
Looking West: This outcropping of rocks is known as Courthouse Rock (right) and Jail Rock (left). An irrigation pivot system can be seen in the foreground.

Our journey continued across Nebraska today as the terrain began to rise beneath us. The outcropping shown in Looking West appears out of place when compared to the surrounding landscape. Our job is to figure out how it got here. Are these rocks the result of uplift, caused by forces deep within Earth’s crust pushing toward the surface? Or, are these outcrops the remnants of an ancient river bed? We analyzed a few rock samples before an approaching storm chased us off the rock with lightening bolts. Nothing like a little electricity to get your feet moving….
