Rachel Carson Reserve Insider’s Guide – Your private 3-hour boat tour begins and ends on the Historic Beaufort Waterfront and ventures into remote areas of the Rachel Carson Reserve not accessible by local ferry operators. You’ll look for dolphins, turtles, and wild horses during your transit along the shores and tidal creeks of the Reserve, in addition to ospreys and shorebirds that feed and gather in this pristine ecosystem. The Reserve is located along the Atlantic Flyway and provides a resting and refueling point for numerous migratory birds. You’ll have ample opportunities to capture nature with your camera or collect seashells cast ashore with the tides. You’ll also observe the various research projects being conducted in the Reserve. Your photography tour begins and ends on the Historic Beaufort Waterfront on an 18-foot flat bottom boat that provides you with amazing water views across the marshes, tidal flats, and sandy shoals of the Rachel Carson Reserve. Guest may also walk along the sandy shores and marshes for land-based photography. Learn strategies to utilize the Reserve’s pristine environment and diverse habitats to enhance the composition of your images. This tour is highly customizable to meet the photographer’s needs: land/beach/seascapes, birds, horses, aquatic/estuarine ecosystems, maritime forests. Licensed/Certified/Permitted Guide

Each Eco-Adventure includes personalized guide service with Miriam Sutton. Miriam is a Licensed Boat Captain (USCG-OUPV) with 25+ years of experience guiding visitors along the Crystal Coast. She is a science educator and is knowledgeable of Beaufort’s Maritime History and the Ecology of the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve (where she serves as an Advisory Board Member).

* This activity occurs on the Rachel Carson Reserve, a site protected by the N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve, a program of the Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management, and is also a Dedicated State Nature Preserve.
